Hi all.
Just got my '49 TEA20 back together today and when I started her I had white smoke, I think a mixture of steam and oil, coming from the breather. Enough to cast a haze on my property. Seems to produce more under load after warm up. I haven't rebuilt the engine. I've just fixed a bunch of stuff that needed fixing when I bought her. I replaced water pump, hoses, gaskets, and installed a 12 volt charging system. There doesn't seem to be oil in the radiater or water in the oil. I'll check again tomorrow after she's cooled off for the night.

Any help is greatly appreciated, as always.

Steam from the breather? Do you mean where you put in oil, on the left side of the block? Crankcase pressure means blowby past the piston rings. Steam would imply coolant leaking into the combustion chamber, and then the blowby. But that seems like a double-whammy that you shouldn't be so unlucky to have happen after that work. Most unlucky people just have steam coming from their exhaust.
Did you have the head off? Could be some kind of head gasket leak letting water in the cylinders, now that you have pressure in the cooling system with your new water pump. Did it blow oil before?

Hi Jim, thanks for responding. Yes, it blew a small amount of oil before but nothing out of the ordinary for a 52-year-old tractor. I am contemplating having a valve job done. I think I'll go ahead and do that this winter and pray that a newly surfaced head, new valve guide seals, and head gasket will solve my "mystery steam." If not, I'll be back for more advice.
You guys are great. I love this board.

I agree with Phil(VA), it's very likely rings. If you have the head off, and do all that valve work etc, you will be disheartened when you get it all together only to discover that it's the same as before.
Then you get to take it all apart again, in order to do the rings. Granted, you will be more efficient at removing the head, but you probably won't be doing it with a smile on your face. How about, while the head is away having its valve work done, you do the rings at the same time? Then you'll get to check out the condition of the journals on the crankshaft, and maybe it will need to be ground and new bearings installed...seriously though, I do think the problem will not be solved by a valve job.
Regards,
Jim

Thanks fellas, you've convinced me. Actually good logic tells me that blow-by doesn't come from bad valve seals. She's not blowing steam now which is good, but I smell like a rigger when I come in from the oil smoke. Again, not as bad as before but more than I care for.
Thanks, again and Happy Thanksgiving if you're stateside.

I'm thinking smoke from breather is not valve related so much as rings. Not sure valve work will address it.
