finished my FULL 12v conversion tonight(alternator has been a belt tensioner since i got the tractor in '91). one small problem: when i turn the key off the tractor slowly dies. if i turn the headlights on it quits asap. i used a side marker light to prevent run on. do i need to add a diode? more lights? a resistor? (pretty sad coming from a guy who works with electronics every day eh?)

I had the same problem when I changed to an alternator, I fixed it by putting the primary wire that goes to coil on the acc.post of the ignition switch rather than on the switched hot post. It works fine now.

Seems like turning off the key is not disconnecting the primary of the coil.

You don't need a diode if you have the marker light. You only need one or the other. I would try a smaller bulb in the side marker. I installed a too small bulb in mine and it would not excite the alt. Used a bigger bulb from tail lite and all is well. Maybe a # 1156 or 1157 .

do you think i could take one of the bulbs out of the marker light and make this work? i'll try it tonight and report back.

Yes try it and let us know. Once you excite the alt. you could remove both bulbs and the alt. would continue to charge until you stopped the engine . next time you run the tractor you would need to excite the alt. via the light bulb again.

DunerWi, I know you are correct having discovered what you said above, by trial and error. Can you explain the term 'Excite'? Why does it charge once excited until the tractor stops, only needing to be excited again at the next start-up. Does the charge flow OUT at the Alt1 terminal, or is it coming in? How does the bulb make it work? Is the bulb wired in series or parallel? I ran my wire thru a double pole ignition switch so it connects when on, and the Alt1 circuit is open when off.Your comments deeply appreciated. I want to understand what is happening.

Excite means you supply elec. to alt. to get it to charge . Once excited it keeps charging till you shut engine off. The bulb is no more than and idiot light on your cars dash board. Check the archives on the Ford 9N board. I am not that much of an electrician. Wiring diagrams from mid to late 70s GM cars/ trucks are very helpful.

I think you must of got your wires mixed up. Maybe you tied the coil wire on to the alternator side of the switch and it is only stopping because of voltage drop due to the battry being disconected from the circuit and the lights droping the voltage till it stalls due to a low spark? Not sure but check the wires again. Mark
