My fergie was running smoothly, then began sputtering, run full again for short while, sputter, etc. Took off fuel line to carb, plenty fuel, put in new plugs...I suspect problem in carb, but I'm not a genius in this area...any thoughts?

I had a similar problem with my TO-20. The small tubes in the sediment bowl were resticted by some sort of corrosion. To check for this when the engine is running look at sediment bowl it should stay full when the engine is reved.

Condensor?
I thought my problem was fuel but it was the condensor. Just a thought.

Dick: In addition to what Mike and Mark have suggested, I would check your fuel system from the tank all the way to the carb. Start with the sediment bowl and check to see if there is rust and other crud. If so, I would remove the shut-off from the tank, clean out the screen, flush the tank, then proceed through the fuel line and the carb. If it turns out that the tank is the culprit, it can probably be cleaned and sealed (if it is really rusty). Many times it is dust and dirt that is the problem. When you get everyting back together the fuel shut off should be opened 2 turns for the main tank and to the full open position for the reserve tank. I would not tackle the carb as the culprit until you exhaust potential problems between the tank and the carb. Hope this helps, David, MI

#1 First make sure your exhaust is not clogged
#2 Make sure the air cleaner is not blocked either
#3 If you have an inline filter replace it
#4 Most likely problem is that gas is not getting thru.As Mark H says, check for rust in the bowl, some cleaner added to the fuel may help.If not, the carb should be disassembled. The first 3 recommendations take just minutes apiece.

Hello; Check the bowl on the carb for rust in it. You can un/screw the plug on the bottom to see it their is and if fuel is getting into it. If not your line to the carb or float needle valve may be stuck or pluged. Mark H.
