Advice requested!

I have been following a few discussions regarding the use of an ORC and have noticed a recommendation that Princess Auto has one in their catalogue for the Canadaian market. Has anyone seen this coupler? Is it of high quality? There have been a few other comments on this board (in a bunch of places and I can't remember where) about sloppiness and play when using some ORCs. Another few comments were made about the varied quality of some of the units on the market.

I have a 51 Fergie that I would like to use a rotary mower on but, after reading this forum, I want to be sure I get a good ORC on it first.

Any suggestions what to look for because, to this inexperieinced eye, all of those metal things look pretty substantial until they start to twist, bend and distort.

Thanks for any advice.

Checked out the ORC @ Princess Auto; it's $74.99 Cdn. Looks very substantial, seems to click nicely in the one direction, etc. Does say "Made in India" so that probably explains the good price. Has two grease fittings, one opposite the other.
Of the six or so that I saw there though only one still had the roll pin with it so do watch out for that.
I would buy one (will, actually).

I got mine a couple years ago from Agri Supply (online) and it also was made in india. If memory serves me it only cost around $40. I have bought lots of parts and pieces from them in the past few years and am quite satisfied.

What an excellent response to this question of ORC quality. Thanks. Now I guess I need to determine if I can wait until I am in Ottawa or Toronto again so I can be sure I get the pin or do I take a chance on mail order.

Once again, you folks are a great help and your personal experieince is very much appreciated.

I would call them up when mail ordering and get the person to physically walk over and pick one out that has a pin with it. They all seem to wear cell phones so I think that would work; might save you an extra trip someplace. Also because oft he way the thing is made the roll pin has to be a specific length so it will really save hassles if you can just get the right one in the first place.
One thing I meant to mention was that of course it adds some length to your pto. For me it means I have to shorten the driveshaft on my snowblower, since it's already at its shortest length. Jim

Hi Bob,
Just to let you know that the pin is just a 5/16" roll pin; you can probably pick it up at any local hardware store and probably get change back from .25 US. Definately the best investment you can get for your tractor. Don't learn the hard way like a lot of us did. I was lucky; it was only a length of field fencing.

They look pretty good to me, by eye. I expect I'll be over to the store in the next couple of days so will take a close look and report back.

I buy quite a bit of stuff a Princess Auto in Dartmouth and it seems lots of others do to judging by the crowds. They have a pretty good guarantee I got a 3/4 drive socket set there for 69.99 Canadian it is of higher quality than I expected and has worked out well. One way to prolong the life of the ORC and hog is to clear the junk out of the area BEFORE you start hogging when my neighbor did my fields we found lots of old wire fence, garden hoses, baling wire, old car parts etc etc left by previous owners also the size of stuff you are cutting makes a big difference in how much wear goes on the whole driveline.
