I have also been having trouble with this since the numbers on my data plate were unreadable. I finally cleaned enough grease and dirt off the engine block to find Z-120-600a cast on the side of the engine block. I assume that this means it is a TO-20. I beleive this number is on the left fwd side of the block. My engine is currently torn apart to be overhauled and so far what I've found the numbers for the To-20 are matching up to what's in the shop manual. Good Luck!

TO30: Has Continental Z129 engine (serial on engine prefix is Z129); has external oil filter on side of block.
TO20: Has Continental Z120 engine (serial prefix is Z120); has oil filter inside pan. Also, check serial number on dash. Should be a plate on dash with tractor serial number starting with TO.... Look at link to left side of this page and find serial number section and compare.
Hope that helps.

Phil's answer is exactly correct. Another way is that one of the valves has the same angle on both the 20 and 30, but the other valve has a shallower angle on the 30 than the 20. I don't have an overhaul manual handy at the moment but I believe the exhaust valves are the same but the intakes are different. But, follow Phil's answer for sure.

To add to what Wayne said. According to the shop manual I have. The intake valve face angle and seat angles for a TO-20 are 45 degrees. TO-30's are 45 deg. The seat angle for the inlet valves are 45 deg. for the TO-20 and 30 deg. for the TO-30. The biggest difference in the exhaust is if you have rotators or not. The face angle for the exhaust valve with rotators on both the TO-20 and 30 is 44 deg. Without rotators it is 45 deg.Exhaust valve seat angles are 45 deg. for both TO-20 and TO-30. I hope this helps

I need to make a correction. TO-30 inlet valve face angles are 30 deg. The inlet valve seat angles for a TO-30 are also 30 deg. Sorry for the screw up.
