I'm working on a tea20 85 and I just overhauled the carb and ignition system. It now starts very easily but only runs on 2 cylinders. It also looks like a little smoke is blowing out the oil fill cap. I think I also hear a bit of a knocking sound. I haven't done a compression test (still need to buy one). Oil pressure is good (40psi cold, 25-30 warm). Is there a chance this is just a valve problem or does it sound like rebuild time?

I have heard the standard engine is hard to find parts for. Where should I look for parts? Figure agco might have them? I live near belleville ontario if it matters.

thanks

Smoke out the oil filler cap means pressure in the crankcase. Pressure comes from the combustion chamber. You will need to give your tractor a set of rings.
Since you will then have your motor all apart you can do all kinds of other stuff. Knocking could well be main bearings. You can easily get 0.010, 0.020, and 0.030" undersize on these and the big end bearings too, from a number of sources. If you get in there and discover that you need them post again and I'll let you know some possible sources for these.

Hi Newbie
In the Belleville area you have McKeown Farm Equipment (MF dealer) in Springbank 613-395-3883 - they seem to be pretty knowledgeable folks and I have obtained a few parts (distributor cap, points) for my 2085 (1951) over the counter there. You also have a great tractor "recycler" in your area - Orser Equipment - 613-968-3156 - again really helpful folks with a lifetime of experience. Good luck with your 2085 - they are a sweet little tractor.

Hi -

The comments on wiring sound like the right track, and the suggestion for a compression check might be worth following up.

Rod Swinamer in NS may have suggestions too.

Vapromatic Canada (wholesale only) has strong aftermarket supplies of Standard parts. Many dealers use them; if you have a problem finding one, drop me a note.

I spent a pleasant afternoon re-learning that the distributor on my TE-20 rotates counter-clockwise, unlike any other engine I have ever worked on. The result was that cylinders 1 and 4 were firing, but I had the wires for #2 and 3 reversed. Maybe that is your problem also.
Good luck!
Tex

Are you sure that you have the correct setting on the plug wieres???
But yes, it can be time for a rebuild...the valve seats on mine were completely "Done", it cost me a few bucks, but now they are fine... But a comp test will comfirm it (Or not.....;))

Regards Jone
