Hello,

My dad and I are doing a major winter service job on his '55 tea20. While draining the oil out of the differential/hydraulic system/transmission we noticed a lot of sludge in the oil pan that is located underneath the tractor about even with the dipstick. We took out all the bolts but the pan would not come off, it is loose though. What is the proper way to remove it? We haven't pried on it for fear of breaking something inside. Thank you for your help.

Sounds as if you have loosened the hyd. pump. You should obtain a service manual. To remeove the pump you need to drain the oil, remove the pto shaft (4 bolts) remove both hand hole covers. One of the covers holds the oil dipstick, unhook the linkage in the bottom of housing that controls your lift. This is a fork about 4 inches across and the control valve is in the middle. Can be difficult to unhook as you need to spread the fork off the control valve. I would put a few bolts back in the pump while undoing the rest of items above. Some pumps don't just fall out the bottom eithr. Takes a bit of twisting and turning. Don't force anything,it will come apart.

Also note that the bottom part of the linkage that's about 4" across, on these later models, has a yoke bolted between its two sides that must be removed before it can be spread. There is a 7/16" head, 1/4" bolt on each side holding the yoke in place. It is possible to reach in there through the round side plate covers and undo them by feeling around. Remove the yoke, then gently spread the fork with one arm in each hole. Then with your third arm, disconnect the control valve from the linkage. Only once the linkage is off the control valve and the pto shaft has been removed, will the pump drop out. Tough to describe - but with a combination of feeling around and staring in the side holes with a flashlight, you'll see what's up. Once you have it all apart it becomes a lot more obvious.

Note that the output of the pump goes up through a vertical tube to the top cover. Therefore the seal of the gasket between the pump and the transmission housing is critical - pump operating pressure is 2100 psi.

There are 3 drain plugs after you follow the previous postings directions as to proper removal of the pump and PTP shaft leave your drainage containers under the tractor. Some have used a weed sprayer wand setup with diesel fuel to flush out the case. There seems to be a lot of sludge that collects on the sides. So far as refilling I used 80w-90 Extreme pressure gear oil many have had different experiences and opinions on this subject. The manual for the 20-85 (purchased thru this website) says to use SAE 80 below 50F and SAE 90 above 50F gary
