I just got my first tractor (a 4000) and after running for 20 minutes, it overheats. It has a new radiator, the fan belt is tight and the coolant flows very well. Before I move onto the next logical step (the thermostat), I was wondering if there could be something that I've overlooked. Thanks for any help.

Is the tractor actually overheating (coolant coming out of the overflow), or does the gauge just say it's overheating and yet everything else appears to be normal?

If it is the latter, check for a stuck voltage stabalizer on back of the instrument panel. This will cause both gauges to read high. To check, pull back dash, and with key on for at least a minute, probe the back of the "box" with the two screws attaching it with a 12 volt test light. One terminal should be hot all the time. The other terminal (that splits off and goes to both gauges) should be flashing on and off. If it remains steady on all the time, this is your problem, replace the unit.

Otherwise, yes, I would suspect a thermostat which is stuck closed. Do not remove and leave out. Running an engine too cool is not good either!
