What's the difference between a Workmaster and a Powermaster?

My stepson is suffering from 8Nvy (mine) and, in the course of looking for one, stumbled across a 601 Workmaster (at least that's what the sheetmetal said). When he had me to come look at it, the stamp on the transmission casting said 861 <137828> which I believe indicates an 800 series with a 5 speed tranny and two stage clutch (which it has) built between 1958 and 1962.

It was raining when we looked at it, so I didn't take the time to look at the (gas) engine too closely. How do I tell if this is a 601/801 hybrid? I would guess by the engine, but I don't know how to tell the difference?

Also, what is the difference between a Workmaster and a Powermaster? The present owner, who's had it for four years and bought it from a used tractor dealer, mentioned that it had a "power kit" installed.

your right on the models, and years. The 601 was the workmaster with the 134 engine,(about 33 hp)the powermaster was the 801,with a 172 cu.in.(aprox.45hp). Both tractors about same size, weight with the 801 a little beefier.Nice tractors, the 661, 861 very handy with the live pto.Check out Dan's website for a lot of info on these models. >Link
