Have an opportunity to buy a 1969 Ford 5000 Dsl.w/ slect-o-speed. When started there is a loud whining which apears to be comming from the transmission. This is when the selector is in park and through all gear selections. The tractor seems to shift o.k., and has plenty of power. Whining decreases in higher gears and with higher r.p.m.. tractor has 3202 hrs.on it.

I am also trying to find out a fair market value on the tractor. It is clean with very little in the way of dents or scratches. The tires are in fair shape and will have to be replaced in the near future. Every thing else seemes to check out o.k.

Possible transmission pump cavitation going on here. Drain oil from trans, remove bottom access plate, and remove and clean inlet screen. Replace cartridge filter while you're at it (behind 4 bolt plate on LH side of case). If whining still persists, it's possible the pump is damaged in some way. Do a pressure test to see if the pressures are OK. To get to the pump, split tractor behind engine, then it's right there in front of the trans bulkhead.

One more thing, when draining the oil and cleaning the screen, take note of anything inside that doesn't belong, such as metal filings. This will tell you alot about the condition of the trans.

Can't help you on value.
