Purchase Ford 800 series or not?

I am looking at purchasing a 1960's Ford 800 series tractor. It is a diesel, has power steering, PTO, 3-point accessory connection and the "Select-o-matic" transmission. It is in excellent condition. They are asking $4,800. Is this a good unit? A message I read said to avoid the "select-0-matic" transmission. Any feelings on this? Is this a good price? I am using it to cut 15 acres and do chores related to a small horse farm. I want to add a front loader later.

I bought a 63 (?) 881 with s.o.s. trans. and a front end loader about 4 years ago for $2500 (not running). I got it running with a new wire from the coil to the distributor, so thought I'd cut a fat hog for the price!! I've replaced the clutch once ($800 parts and labor) because I was "hard" on it. Replaced it again ($880) 2 years later, without being hard on it. Replaced the clutch pak in the trans. (another $900)because it went out. Thats 3 times I've had the tractor split, in four years. (Do they make hinges for it????)
While it was in the shop I had to borrow a 2000 series, diesel, with standard tran. to do some needed work (clearing horse poop) around our barns. If I was not into my tractor so far, I'd upgrade to a standard trans and probably diesel. Ahh, but what can I say, I still love that tractor!!!

I have an 861(1958). It is gas, wide front with power steering. It was in excellent condition when I bought it for 4500. It has a five speed trans. It works very well on my small acreage. I recently purcahsed a loader that I have not got put on the tractor yet. I have been looking for a loader for a year.
I have never heard anything good about the SOS trans. My local Ford tractor expert says don't buy one.

Barry,
The 800 series was built 55-57, the 801 series was built 58-62. I have the diesel in my 841 and love it. The power steering is needed if you're going to put on a loader unles you like realy big arm muscles. I have heard different opinions on the SOS those in favor say maintenance is the key and since you have a diesel at least you have that in common. The detractors mention a shortage of expensive replacement parts. In good running condition I think $4800 is in the ballpark. I think that the tractor would be quite usable on your horse farm.

I think the 800 series tractors are great! I have had a 850 and now have an 861. I think the extra horse-power comes in handy. I dont do much farming with my 861, mostly brush hog with it. I do plow my garden with it though, it sure does pull a 2-bottom plow good, much better than my fathers 8-N! My 850 had 45 horse-power, all the 801 series have 50 horse-power. The 861 tractors have live PTO that is handy when you do a lot of brush hogging.
