I have an opportunity to buy a Ford 4000, Gas engine with a loader for $1000. THe tractor has a SOS transmission. Neither the forward gears or the reverse gears work. Tractor runs nice. A little history-the tractor lost tranny fluid due to a leak. The leak was repaired but the tractor will not move. It sounds like a hydraulic pump priming problem to me. Any suggestions?

You could buy it and part it out for more than $1000. Especially if it is a pre-1965 4 cyl.
Take the seller's arm off before he realizes this.

Excellent machine - I've got one.

I'm one who normally talks against SoS trannies, but for that price, if the loader & rest of tractor is in good order, buy it! :) I think totally rebuilding an SoS runs $3000, and you should end up with a tractor worth more than $4000. If it's an easy repair, you got a real deal...

Get yourself a repair manual for the tractor and conduct the pressure checks as shown in it. If you have no pressure, check the pump inlet screen. If it's OK, suspect broken torque limiting disc in the flywheel or stripped input shaft splines, which would obviously not turn the pump, thereby no pressure. Do you know if the PTO works? If not, suspect one of the above. Could be a relatively easy repair for such an apparent major problem.
