I have just acquired a 8N '51 ford that has a motor that was rebuilt within the last two years. The problem that I have is excess gas usage. Gas smokes out of the muffler at idle and load speeds include being sluggish. I have tried to fix this problem by tuning the motor including; new spark plugs, points & condenser, setting the timing and adjusting the carburetor. The only other thing that I can think of is rebuilding the carburetor. Would this be the next step to follow? Help?

I would check the air filter or a stuck choke. Try disconnecting the air cleaner for a moment to see if the engine performance changes. Also, check to make certain that the choke butterfly in the cark is open

Allen,
At this point I would do a compression test on all cylinders.

It sounds like your carb is just letting through too much gas. It most likely needs rebuilding which is relatively simple and inexpensive. This should solve your problem.
