I'm looking at a Ford 5000. Not sure of the age, but probably older model. What are the pluses and/or minuses for this tractor, and what's a good price range for western NY. It seems to be in decent shape, but probably has moderately high hrs.

A used tractor is only as good as its previous owners. If they were good to the tractor, it's still a good tractor. However, here in SW GA. the 5000 Ford is spoken in the same breath as the 4020 JD. They are considered the 2 best tractors built. Prices range from $4500 for a junker to as high as $7000 for a real clean late model tractor with good rubber. Never saw one around here with a cab.

Just saw a 5000 diesel sell at a public farm auction last week and it brought $6,500.00. It was a good clean tractor with like new rubber, but no cab. Around 4500 hrs. if I remember correctly. Other tractors at the same auction were 4520 JD--$5000.00. A 4020 JD-$7600.00, and a 720 JD, $2100.00. None had cabs, and the 720 had no 3 pt. but had brand new rubber, as did the 4020. This is in North Missouri.

One of the best tractors Ford ever made for its time. Pluses: good engine, strong driveline, heavy front axle, decent steering, bulletproof rear axle, final drives and brakes, independent PTO, strong and durable 3 point.

Minuses: crashbox transmission, poor choice of speeds, only two reverse speeds, (SOS trans would be an OK alternative), charging system (throw away the generator!).

Can't help you on value. Will leave that to someone more qualified than I.

Be careful with hydraulic system. In many case the pump can be damaged. For the engine, don't forget to look at the oil. If you see water in oil, may be the cylinder is damaged.
