My friend recently purchased a set of used 1/2 tracks for his Ford 8N at an auction. Does anyone out there have an instruction manual which shows how these track are supposed to be mounted???? (Or knows where I can get my hands on one?) There are lots of bits and pieces. I will be most thankful for any information. Thanks to all.

The N-Newsletter has photocopies for both the Bombardier and the Arps tracks. I have a set of the Bombardier tracks, and ordered the manual for around $3.00, I think. They now have a web site with a list of the manuals they have.

Try giving a call to Palmer Fossum in Northfield, Minnesota. He's got several of those beasts in his collection and might be able to point you toward a manual. Also check the N-Series archive, they've got lots of manual reprints available.

I have a book called Ford and Fordson tractors that shows a picture of an 8N with the half tracks. The most important part in case you don't already know, is that they require a set of bogie/idler wheels that mid mount, they look pretty much in the picture like the front wheels.

They were made by Bombardier which still exists making SkiDoo brand snowmobiles and it is possible that they may be able to help with actual instructions.

Good Luck

Kim

btw It is hard to imagine how it was possible to steer these things...especially going forward. The half tracks were meant mainly for use in snow and mud according to the book. I am wondering if the tractor was meant to go backwards, dragging the front end instead of having it bog down, steering with the brakes like a skidsteer.

I have a set of half tracks on an old Oliver tractor. We have been using them or the last 3 years to gather sap in our sugar bush. You can adjust the tension on the tracks to either put more or less weight on the front wheels. This way you can steer either with the front wheels or with the brakes. Using them prevents making large ruts in the woods and on the fields we have to cross to get to the sugar house. In fact we are trying to locate another set for our other tractor. If anyone knows where there is another set please let me know. Thank you

Thanks to All who offered advice. The tracks are on now. And they work great. The tractor steers quite well - even on the grass. I'm sure we will get to try it in the snow before too much longer. (Here in Alberta!) The tracks were made by "Blackhawk Mfg." and look much the same as the Bombardier set in the pictures. Thanks again to all who offered help.
