My 63, 4000 starter turns slowly and if it does not start right away will stop turning and will just click when I push the starter button. I can get it to turn again sometimes by turning the fan blade by hand. I just replaced the starter motor about 4 months ago with a rebuilt because the old one was doing the same thing. It worked a lot better at first but kept getting worst the more I used it.I also replaced the solinoid and the battery also. The only thing I haven't replaced is the starter drive.Do you think this can be my problem and how do you know if it needs replacing? P.S. This is still a 6 volt system

Tony If the problem is still there after you check or have checked the starter, battery, starter solenoid, which will also give a slow crank condition , check the battery cables they should be 0 gauge or 1 gauge cable with a 6 volt system which is a large diameter cable , And will also give a slow crank condition.

Had the same problem with my '64 4000. Had the starter taken apart to be rebuilt, but didn't need it. Then I began cleaning connections, starting with the battery. Cleaned all connections, replaced cracked wiring, etc. Works fine now, for a 6 volt. I still occasionally stick a battery charger on it overnight, as 6 volt just doesn't charge itself with a generator like a 12 volt with an alternator.

6 volts are just very unforgiving about good wires and connections. I'll probably convert to 12 volt this winter, but for now, it works ok.

Are you sure the battery is good, and fully charged? Most garages can still test 6 volt batteries.

If you are sure the battery is good, what happens if you connect a set of jumper cables directly to the starter from the battery? Start with just the negative cable from the negative side of the battery to the starter post. If it is better then one of the negative cables or the solenoid is broken or dirty. If it isn't better than before then add a cable from the positive side of the battery directly to the starter housing as well (you may have to make a really clean spot to check this). If it runs better with both cables then you probably have a bad ground connection from the battery.

I almost forgot. This is probably obvious but the safety police will take me away if I don't remind you. Be sure the tractor is in NEUTRAL because when you jumper around stuff you disable the starter safety interlock.
