4000 engine problems?

Need some help. I purchased a 1963 4000 (industrial) about 18 months ago. I keep it at my place in Northern Minnesota and use it to clear trails and other assorted "logging" and "snow removal" type work on a sporatic basis (a couple days out of the month). This spring I had trouble getting it started. Ended up rebuilding the carb and found out the pin for the float had slipped out. Ran fine until summer came. Then I had trouble with vapor lock (the gas lines goes right down through the exhaust manafold amd muffler). I put some foam tape on the line and it seemed to work. I went up this weekend and after some effort got it started, but for only a few minutes. I would choke it,it would start, run for about 1 to 2 minutes and die. Could not restart. I wouuld let it sit for about 5 mnutes and it would start again only to die 1-2 minutes later. I did notice that the gas cut off lever is starting to leak and that there was quite a bit of "smoke" comming from the breather cap (did not seem to be antifreze because the level stays full). Any amd all suggestions appreciated. THANKS

There is a good possibility that the shut off valve may not open or the strainer in the tank may be choked up. It is unlikely on the other hand for the float to stick and cause the crankcase to fill with gas since this is an updraft carb. There is almost no history of vapor lock on these tractors because they are gravity fed. Check the shut off valve and tank stainer first. If there is smoke comming from the breater tube at the front of the engine then you are probily in need of a ring job.

Thanks for the help! I'm going up Friday for a week to hunt the wily white tail deer. During which time I'll apply all this newfound knowledge and, if the Great Spirit blesses me we'll bring a big one in with the 4000. Thanks again!

The comments from Tommy D and Don S are good ones I have this same problem with my NAA and it too sits for extended periods. For sometime it was flustrating. I changed to a rubber flexible fuel line. My tractor starts easily but then stalls/stops running after 1 to 2 min. I disconnect the fuel line at the carb and find ot first there is no fuel but then in a few seconds it flows freely. I reconnect the fuel line and everything is fine. If I happen to use the tracton often I do not have this problem. Apparently the fuel in the line from cutoff valve drains to float bowl leaving enougn there for the 1 to 2 min. run time.
PS I changed to the flexible fuel line so it can easily be disconnected .

Mark,

There are 2 fuel filter screens on this tractor, one above the fuel bowl and one behind the shut-off under the tank. Make sure both of these are cleaned. Yours, like mine, sits more than it is operated and chewing gum forms on these screens as gas ages. Mine had same symptoms.

Also, these shut-off valves are famous for leaking, or not working at all. If you get a new one, be sure to test it before draining fuel and going through the hassle of removing the old one. I just blew through mine with an air hose.
I bought one last fall that did not function, I discovered, AFTER draining fuel and installing.

Check out the link below:

Hope this helps,
Tommy D.

Mark, Sounds like maybe you should check the oil level in the crank case. Could be that the float stuck open and the contents of your gasoline tank gravity fed into the crank case. Believe me, it can happen!
