I'm trying to help out a friend from work. Can anyone tell me about the brakes on a 1953 or 1954 Ford Jubilee. John wanted to know what all is involved in replaceing them.

They are the same as 8N brakes. They are simple, mechanically actuated shoe brakes, with a screw-type adjuster. They are just different enough from Hundred Series brakes that I would probably get the details wrong.

Somebody on the N board may already have a nice write-up on doing the brakes.

If you can change the brake shoes on your car, you can change the shoes on the Jubilee. About $70 per side for shoes. Some of the older shoes had riveted linings, for which you can buy new linings and rivets. Most folks opt for the newer bonded shoes, since they're easier to deal with.
Remove wheels, slack off adjusters, remove drum retaining screws, remove drums, make a drawing or take a picture of what's inside, remove springs, etc.,remove shoes, reassemble. Should be able to do a brake job in a couple of hours total. I wouldn't bother with turning the drums unless they are really grooved badly or glazed.
