What should I see on a voltmeter at the battery when the engine is running. I measure 12.5 volts not running and 13.2 volts running, but the alternator light stays on. If the alternator is charging at all , shouldn't the light stay out? Thanks for any help.

LEAD ACID BATTERIES ARE 2.35 V PER CELL OR SHOULD BE 14.1 VOLTS FOR A 12 VOLT BATTERY. 14.1V OR MORE IS THE USUAL CHARGING VOLTAGE. LOW CHARGING ON YOUR SYSTEM COULD INDICATE A FEW DIODES GONE IN THE ALTERNATOR. YOU NEED A GOOD DIGITAL VOLT METER TO MEASURE THE VOLTAGE ACCURATELY.

This kinda situation really depends on a lot of things. bad connections, old/worn out battery, does it set a lot, etc. I'm certainly not an expert but have learned a bunch recently on my own rig about the charging system. I believe a 12 VDC system should show 13 to 14 volts depending on the RPM. I would take the Alt. in and have it checked after you make sure the connections are all good especially the battery posts and the belt isn't slipping.
Good luck Deane
