1953 Jubilee valve problems

Worked on Dad's Jubilee again the other day... It ran real rough, and we could tell that at least one valve was stuck open by the way it turned over (you could hear it turn over faster when it hit that cylinder.) So we removed the hood and gas tank for easy access. Took the valve cover off, and lo and behold- one push rod was no longer under the rocker arm. Evidentally, the valve clearance has become so worn that the push rod basically slipped out! Once it was back in place, we spun it over to watch the valves, and found another problem- one other valve was sticking open. After freeing it, it would still stick every time it was pushed down. We assumed the valve guide was corroded with carbon. A few light taps on the end of the valve stem crushed the brittle carbon and the valve sprung back to life. Thought this story might help someone who has suspected valve trouble to check it out.

Brant, I purchased a 1953 Golden Jubilee 17 years ago for a low price because it would not run. The problem with the motor was similar to yours, stuck valves! What you have done seems like a quick fix, but it is exactly what I did 17 years ago and it has run great since! The only work I have done is routine work such as oil, filter changes ect. I have 26 years in a Ford dealer in the field of transmission work and many of my fellow workers made sport of my repair! Hey why fix something that works. My question, is there any way to make the hyd. system for the 3-pt work better in cold weather? It is fine when it warms up. Thanks, John
