4000 Tractor a good buy but needs work?

I'm going tomorrow to look at a Ford 4000 tractor that a guy I work with is selling. It is a 70's model diesel. The tractor will not start from the switch. He says his dad parked it one day and went to start it the next and it wouldn't crank. It will turn over but not crank. He says that they sucessfully start it by "Pulling it off". Although a noble effort, I would much rather turn a key or push a button (and yes I have electric windows on my truck;lazziness).

Does anyone out there know what all could be causing this? The dealer of course says an overhaul on the engine and the head would be best (for me or for him though). Why would something start by pulling and not by key or switch. I am ok with working on it and don't have an imediate need to use it.

Oh, and the price is $1500.00 and the tractor appears in good shape. So I could afford to overhaul if needed. But that is not my preference.

Help me oh wise ones!

Chuck

Also, where can I find some good history/info on the mechanics of this tractor?

Chuck, The price sounds good even though there are problems. It could be as simple as a weak battery or bad connections. They need to turn over pretty good(fast). That's why it runs when pulled, it's turning over faster. It could also be a sign of weak compression(overhaul). Does it have the big battery(over 1 foot long)? They seem to crank better with the big battery verses a car type battery. Does it run strong and rev up pretty good once pulled started? If so, it's probably battery or starter related. I would buy it if everything else worked OK and tires were good. At that price, you could afford to have it overhauled. If it stopped cranking good all the sudden, I would suspect starting system. And wanting to crank with switch is not being lazy! Just my thoughts, but it's hard to tell without being there. Good Luck
