i have a '65 4000 with a select-o-speed. my family has owned it for more than 20 years and it has worked great. i can only remember one time when we needed parts for it and we found them at chappel tractor sales in milford, NH. i do agree that SOS is probably a lot more complicated then it needs to be, but i've always been happy with it.

I bought a 1965 Ford 4000 select-o-speed one year ago and it works perfect. I was warned of potential problems but so far have had none. The SOS's are getting rare as the dealer in this area sold me a trans filter he had in stock for 10 years. He said mine was the only one around for a few hundred miles. I was told the designer of the select-o-speed was hired by John Deere and developed the speed-shift. Anybody know?

Mike I have a 62 41205, same as 871 with a selecto-o-speed it has 6000 hrs on it bought it from the original owner who took very good care of all his equipment, the trans is original and has oil&filter changes and band adjustments done when it was supposed to, and still works very good to this day, it all depends on who had it and how well it was taken care of, the same old story for any piece of equipment maitenance, maintenance, maintenance , if the price is right it is worth a shot, like Truck said you can always change the trans. if you have too. Thanks Tony Jacobs

I've got a 3000 Ford Diesel I bought seven years ago. It had a select-o-speed in it. The tractor only shows 570 hours. It went to slipping a couple years back, then some of the gears wouldn't work at all. I talked with several tractor mechanics around my area, only 2 would work on them. It was going to cost more than I paid for the tractor to rebuild the tranny so I replaced it with the 8-speed manual and 2-stage clutch. Really a good improvement and investment

Wondering how easy the conversion was, what it cost ya, and where you found the parts...But I still am gonna try to fix my selecto speed first.. ( Adjustments were messed up. )

Got the parts here in Springfield, Mo. Paid $200 bucks for the labor. I now have a total of $5000 bucks in the tractor. Bought it cheap because it had the select-o-speed. Hey, I really did like the select-o-speed tranny, just couldn't afford to keep it up around here. Just couldn't fine anyone here to repair it within my budget. Had one guy tell me he took his to the old Ford tractor dealership that used to be here. The repair bill for rebuilding his sos was more than his tractor was worth. He told the dealership to keep it!

I'm sureprised you found the parts to convert to a standard tranny, those are in tight supply since many are looking to do the same...

The Select-o-Speed was pretty well built for it's day, but there seem to be about 3 times as many parts in there as a regular tranny. Trannies need repair every so often - you do the math. :) Some parts are getting a little scarce, and it is harder to find a mechanic who can do a good job of repairing them. Around here SoS Fords bring about 1/2 of a similar Ford with 5-speed tranny.
