I`ve got an `88 1720 and the temp gauge quit working. Talked to the Ford dealer and about all they would tell me is that they`ve never seen one fail before, but a new gauge is only $79.99. Before I lay down that much hard earned cash, for a gauge which might not even be bad, does anyone have any ideas? Not long ago, the air filter light starts flashing sporadically, and I put in a new element since the old one had quite a few hours on it. Light still flashes. Could these two problems be related? Everything under the hood looks o.k., and no visible obstructions to the breather. Thanks for any input.

I have only seen 1 temp gauge failure on 20 series compacts, and the dealer I work for has hundreds of them out. I would check ALL of the instrument wiring for opens & shorts, and poor grounds, as I believe your problems are related. Look for varmint damage in the harness behind the dash/on top of the fuel tank. Check the gauge by removing the wire from the sender & grounding it to the chassis, it should go to hot. Use a jumper wire also to eliminate the sender wire from the circuit. Good luck.

RickB., thanks for the advice, sounds like good info to me. For some odd reason,I guess I have considered my tractor immune to rodent damage. Going to head out and check right now. BTW, with almost 1400hrs on mine, this is the first problem I have had. I was beginning to think that it was the perfect machine.
