I have purchased a tractor with no decal identification. I was told it was made in England.
I checked out Oak's page but still am in dark about modeland year manufactured. The numbers from the right side of transmission housing are.
6H29B
J276
B 054575 (right after the B and last 5 there is a star stamp)
All help appreciated. BJ

"B054575" is the serial number. The only info that can be gleaned from that is that the tractor was made in England (that's what the "B" prefix means). "6H29B" is a date code, most likely August 29, 1966, assuming that it is a thousand series tractor (2,3,4,and 5000). The "J276" means nothing to me at all. Where exactly did you find this number? On top of the trans behind the starter? If so, go back out with a wire brush and a flashlight and take a closer look. A legit model number should look something like "D1014C" (in this example, a later model all purpose 4000 with diesel engine, live PTO and 8 speed trans).

-J276 could be (6)J27C which would tie in with the number for August. The part coded could have been built (6)year, J September, 27 date,. C afternoon shift. All parts were coded and eventually brought together under the tractor assembly code. So you could get a tractor that was assembled in January 1968 but the parts could have been built on different days, months, shifts through out 1967. Regards

Brian, your theory would be plausible except that he is looking for the numbers in the correct place. If he found these numbers on the LH side of the trans, then I would say that yes, he is looking at a component date code as you say.

However, since he is looking at the correct spot to get the legit numbers, and since he has already found a legit serial number and legit date code (6H29B), then this "J276" number that he is coming up with would have to be a model number of some sort. Trouble is, it does not jive with any info I have here.

I was looking at my old Ford Issued workshop manual for the 2-5000 range. It shows both date code for the transmission, the tractor production date code and the serial number at the location on top of the transmission houseing behind the starter on the models up to 1968. I wondered whether the number in front of the J was not stamped hard enough to be seen and whether the 6 at the end was mistaken for a C. The early codeing was not too clear when new and my eyesight was good. The other numbers however are totally confuseing. They do not even relate to casting numbers. This range of tractors were only built in Highland Park, Antwerp and Basildon here in England which supplied the rest of the world if I remember my Ford courses

Sounds good to me Brian. Sounds like you can make more sense of it than I can. I know that I have no info like that available to me.

Still would like to see a picture of this thing. I think that would clear it up the best.

Have a good one.

Bern,
Picture would settle it as the other numbers do not seem to tie up. Must have some part of a 3000 in there somewhere. At the time of build anything could have been happening. We dealers had to dismantle all front axles as the thrust bearings were being installed upside down, so stamping numbers on houseings might have been missed.
hope you can confirm if BJ sends a picture.

Appreciate all the help, going to take a picture and send to BERN, might go ahead and slap a 3000 sticker on it anyhow.
