I'm in the market for an all-purpose utility tractor with live pto and hydraulics. I've been looking at ads for Ford 2000s, 3000s and 4000s, and there seems to be a lot of overlap in features and price.

Are there certain features other than horsepower that are common to all 2000s, 3000s and 4000s that distinguish one model from the others? Do all the tractors of each model have the same horsepower?

Is there any web site that lists features by model/serial numbers? I've found one for the Ns and hundred series, but not the thousand series.

Thanks for the help.

Bob

THe 3cyl 2000 and 3000's share most features except horespower, as you are finding. The 3cyl 4000 is a little bigger yet, and other than the SU type, has a different (BETTER) front axle & steering system. Most 4000's also have fully independent PTO, not a dual-stage clutch, which is the best you can get on a 2,3000. All 4000's have planetary final drives with manual wet brakes, a big plus over the 9N style brakes on 2's and 3's. A 4000 is a more substantial tractor in many ways. Happy Hunting!

Thanks very much for the good info. Could you please explain the difference between "independent" and "live" pto? Do you think that difference between front axles on the 3000 and 4000 is significant? Make a big difference with a loader, for example, if both have power steering?

Again, thanks for the input.

Bob

The differences in the front axle and steering systems between the 2/3000 and 4000 general purpose tractors is very significant and should be a major factor in choosing between these models without consideration of a loader. I would not purchase a 2/3000 or any other Ford with a double drop steering box with the idea of mounting a loader on it, period. That is not to say there isn't a raft of them out there, and folks will tell you they work out just fine. I don't recommend it because there are too many better choices. Live PTO typically referrs to a 2-stage clutch, where you can stop a tractor's travel without interrupting the PTO, but not stop or start the PTO without interrupting power to the wheels. Independent PTO allows the PTO to be started & stopped regardless of travel, and tractor motion to be started & stopped without affecting the PTO's status. Independent PTO on the 4000 is controlled by an oil-cooled multiple disc clutch, which generally gives a much better service life.
