I have the opportunity to buy a '72 model 2000 3cyl. gas. I have had years of experience with the older 4 cyl. gas engines in the 600/800 series, as well as the 3 cylinder diesel used in 2000/3000 models, but don't know much about the 3 cylinder gas models. What is the track record for these? Is the 3cyl. gas as reliable and sturdy as the old 4cyl. gas models? Thanks for the help.

greg....bt a 70 ford 2000 3 cyc gas 6 mo ago and so far its a pretty impressive machine. mine has a 3 pnt/ pto /bk blade and 3 colors of paint-blue, then yellow then red/primer. Guess someone thot paint it yellow to disguise it as an industrial model. Overall in nice shape but am puzzled by a 4 spd tranny that sticks in 4th gear and then requires about 20 in and out shifts to finally release it. what do you have on yours as the ford dealr said mine is a 4 spd or is it????

Most of the 2000s were 4 speed single clutch. Items such as diesel engines, double clutch, 6 or 8 speed and Selecto-O-Speed(S-O-S) remote hydrauliccs, etc. were options. The 2000 was simply a low end unit for the price aware. Most popular was thee 3000.

Yessir, they are extremely good engines. Just be sure it is'nt worn out and you should be happy with it.
