I have just figured out that I have a Ford 661. This tractor, which I inherited a year ago,had its transmission rebuilt two years ago at a cost of $2880.00 by my father-in-law.

I have a bush hog, disks, and plow that will go with the tractor. What is a reasonable price for this set. They are in good shape and the tractor has good wheels.

Thanks for your in put. I need many opinions.

Around here (Eastern Iowa), the tractor alone would list at a dealer for $4500-$5000, so something in the $5000-5500 range should be reasonable for the package....maybe a bit more depending on the condition and value of the implements.

Hate to show my ignorance, but would a $2800 trans fix mean that this is a Select-O-speed?

I was wondering about that figure myself. A 661 should come with a 5 speed but $2800 sounds like a lot for overhaul of a 5 Speed. I'm not sure the SOS was even available on the 601 series. I kind of think it was only available on the 801 and 901 series (with the bigger engine). When so equipped, the model numbers will be 871,881,971, or 981 depending on whether it has live pto or not.

To Jim and all other 5spd live pto owners , Depending on what was done on this rebuild or where it was done the price may not be that bad , I am replacing a clutch in a 1958 Ford 861 right now , my cost is just under $1000 for a brand new Ford clutch set-up , most rebuilts do not work for shit ,and they always end up being replaced by Ford units for reason or another, These transmissions are not designed for loader work or loader/backhoe work , If you go back and look in the Ford sales books when they were new , 5spd live pto is NOT AVAILABLE WITH ANY INDUSTRAIL TYPE OF TRACTOR OR RECOMENDED FOR ANY TYPE OF LOADER WORK other than a manure loader or a single arm loader where not much weight or digging force is involved, Now 40 years later when parts are scarce, you could spend $2000 on just the clutch and input shafts( used, when you can find them ) So you should think twice about ramming those tractors around with buckets and backhoes on them. Central tractor gets between $1800-$2000 for a used transmission when available ,The live pto 5spd transmission is designed for agricultural work period, What anyone does with them is their own business, but when you break them doing something that they are not designed for ,don't come crying the blues on here saying that they are junk or anything else because you probably broke it doing something it should not be doing and that's your own damn fault, and you hard earned money. I had a beautiful 58 861 4x4 that sat in the barn because I could find a use for what is was intended for, so I sold it to someone who I could trust to use it for that reason, and now it is being used for light duty mowing and shows. Thanks Tony Jacobs

Wow! Guess I'll stop thinking about the 861 with a loader that's for sale around here. Thanks for the heads up.

I paid $3000, for a 661 two years ago.It needed a few hundred dollars work, but figure it's worth about $4000. That was with no equip.Around here,LI,NY, that rig in good cond.would bring $5000 minimum, probably more. Good Luck

If the tractor is in goodshape it would bring a good price in my neck of the woods 5000 to 5500, saw a decent 861 go for 4900, it needed paint and sheetmetal work. Jim prices are good where you are.

Recently there was an 861 with p/s, loader and back blade asking $3800. Never did get down to see it. May still be available. If anyone is interested, email me. I think I still have the phone number floating around in my briefcase.

I bought a '55 850 last summer for $2500. Would have paid more for an 860 but couldn't find one. Prices on these tractors seem to be a bit depressed in this area compared to what I see others paying around the country. Usually see prices in the $3500-$4500 range. It would depend on condition of the tractor and equipment going with it.
