Hi guys. I just bought (what I was told ) is a 1965 - 4000 with loader and 172 cu in motor. The tractor serial numbers are 21301S followed by 64274. The loader is a Ford model I9-337 s/n 2983. I bought it from the second owner who had it 12 years. He bought it from the County of Erie (Buffalo). He gave me the last DMV registration stating 1965 tractor s/n 64274. (back in 1973)

It is currently Ford blue, but under the hood I see some off-white or beige.
It has a 4-spd trans with the three spd range selector on the left side, thus 12 forward speeds.
12 volt generator system.

Any idea what I have?

Jay and Tommy D. 1965 Ford 4cyl. 2000/4000 tractor production Started with serial#64440 in Jan.1965 and ended in Sept.1965 Before serial#73000 , exact number is not published. This infomation is according to Ford published Literature and Manuals. So your serial# 64274 is a Dec.1964 built date probably sold as a 1965. Model# 21301S means, 2=2000/134c.i.engine, 1=1963 or later production, 30=Industrail tractor(colors would be buff/blue combination), 1=four speed with pto, S=sherman transmission. From What I know 1965 were 12 volt tractors, not 6 volt like 1964 gas tractors. 19-337 is a model# 724 Ford loader with 2000# lift capacity and double acting cylinders. That should clear up any questions about your tractor. Thanks Tony Jacobs

Jay Ford did make 1965 Four cyl. 2000 and 4000 tractors and they did look just like a 1964. I had one and stripped it for parts. I will post you some more Info. as soon as I can find it.

I would go back and verify the numbers again. Look on the left side, just above where the starter bolts on - there is a flat spot on the bell housing. Should see 2 numbers like you had here.

If these numbers are correct, you have a 134 ci, 2000, made in 1964. Problem is that between 1962 and the beginning of 1964, there were only 37,930 made. This means they would have had to make and sell twice that many in 1964 alone. The model number is as follows:

21301
2 = 134 cu. in. gas or 144 cu. in. diesel engine
1 = Ind. and ag. models produced after 1963
3 = Utility-type tractor w/non-adj. front axle
01 = Four-speed w/o PTO

No idea what the "S" is..... .

If this is not correct, check the numbers as mentioned above. If you bought this as a 4000 with the 172 "Red Tiger", the seller was mistaken. Also, the 4000's made in 1965 were 3 cyl., not 4, and were COMPLETELY different animals.

Thanks Tommy...I was afraid you would say "2000".

I double checked the numbers...they are correct. The only thing to add, is there are diamonds fore and aft the 64274 s/n. It's also a gas engine.

I also found casting numbers on the right side of the block which read " CONN 6015J" and a set on the left side "7F16" ( the 6 could be a 0 ). That one looks like a casting pour date.

Are these any help?

Are there any differences in appearance between a 134 ci and a 172 ci?

Does the high serial number make sense?

Thanks for the help, Jay.

When I bought my Ford 2000, all the sheet metal was a creme color and the main frame was blue. My tractor is a industrial 2000 according to the long decal on the hood. Yours is prob. a 4000 industrial. I dont believe there in a lot of difference from the ind. model to the regular 2000-4000 model. One more thing, the front wheels were creme, the rear had creme centers and silver rims. Bill in Mich
