My father-in-law has a '66 3000 Ford with S-o-S.Shortly after a trip to the shop a long time ago, every other speed (1-3-5-etc)quit working. No grinding or funny noises and the operable gears work fine.Several years later, another trip resulted in the same problem.I think something may have been left out. Now,I can't find a mechanic that knows how to work on S-o-S xmsn. Any suggestions on how to fix it?

As an update, its only four forward gears (1,3,5, and 7) that don't work. They are controlled by clutch #3. Does this mean that something was left out or out of adjustment? Thanks. John

The malfunction you describe does not fit exactly into what we might call "classic" S-O-S malfunction descriptions. You might take a look at A Troubleshooting Guide for the Ford Select-O-Speed Transmission . Find your malfunction (be specific) then look thru the diagnosis guide.

I would guess that your overrunning clutch is not releasing.
