1841 Ford Fluids?

The manuals for my recently acquired 1958 1841 Ford backhoe don't indicate the type of fluid to add to the 4 speed manual, or the rear end. Fluid levels are low, the previous owner indicated he used 90w gear oil in the rear end. The Ford dealer says it should be hydraulic fluid. Which lubricant is correct for this model? Is there a difference between hydraulic fluid and hydraulic oil? I appreciate any advise here. My Operating manual is on order, but I'd like to start work on it now.
Thanks in advance,
Tony M.

Tony Your tractor was designed to use 80W-90 GEAR OIL in both the transmission and the rear end. In the long run you are better off using the gear oil because the early mechanical designs have higher tolerances and specifications for heavier gear oils, whereas newer equipment with better machine work tighter tolerances and resevoirs that combine HYDRAULIC,TRANSMISSION,and sometimes even REAR END can use multi-purpose hydraulic oils because that what they were designed to use. Hello Tony,
The differernce between Hyd fluid and 90 weight or80 weight is the viscosity (Plus this and that)
If your tractor is not leaking use hyd oil (vis
cositty#46 )If you are leaking a little bit not enough to rebuild go with 90 weight.

Thanks for the reply. It seems risky mixing adding gear oil to a leaky hydraulic system. Is this done often w/o bad side effects? I have leaks I can't fix right now. Thanks. Tony M.

TONY DO NOT MIX GEAR OIL WITH HYDRAULIC OIL THEY ARE NOT COMPATIBLE, YOU ASKED WHAT TO USE IN THE TRANS. AND THE REAR END, I TOLD YOU FORD USED 80W-90 GEAR OIL, YOU DID NOT ASK ABOUT THE HYDRAULIC SYSTEM, THERE IS NO DIFFERENCE BETWEEN HYDRAULIC OIL AND FLUID. THANKS TONY JACOBS
