got the shaft outand there wasn't a bearing left on the top or bottom.I got a handful of rollers and part of a bearing cage out of the bottom. I called 3 ford dealers to find pieces and price, got 3 different prices, from 12 to 30.00.guess I'll take the parts and go to one of the dealers and see what I get.

Hilltopper is right. You probably have the top bearing going out. There is no such thing as a plastic bearing of some sort for a replacement however.

Make sure you remove and disassemble the entire box to make sure you get out all the little rollers that fell to the bottom.

Bern, they make a plastic type steering gear thrust bearing cup for Fords up to 1964. It replaces the race and the bearing. I would think they would last but a few years of heavy work. I would not use them unless I couldn't find a standard bearing. I am glad they are making these old parts more available now. I used to spend weeks trying to locate new parts. Good Luck.

You are correct Hilltopper about the plastic (called moly bearing). I sold a few when they first came out. They don't hold up to well.

The upper bearing in the shaft tube just above the gear box (not the upper bearing near the steering wheel) has probably fallen apart if it is anything like the older N models. New bearings are available, I think, but they make a plastic one to replace it. There are two in a set, both the same, and cost less than twenty bucks. Then again you might have more serious problems. You need a manual to get the sectors back in right and adjusted. I am not familiar with a 3000 steering gear per se but it sounds like the upper bearing has let go. Good luck.
