Just bought a 850 Ford, and it needed choke to run. Cleaned out carb, and she runs w/o choke now. Especially at high rpms, the exhaust manifold and muffler get cherry red! I have not checked timing yet; could that be the cause? What else could cause that? C'mon you ford gurus, help me out. The exhaust pipe seems to have good flow, and it sounds pretty good. I paid $2500 and it has a commercial-type massey bucket on it, that has down pressure also. Did I pay too much? Also, where can I buy sheet-metal parts; fenders, grill, etc.? Thanks guys.....

I'm no guru, but I always thought that symptom indicated a lean condition. Others with more knowledge will hopefully jump in with more reliable opinions. I also paid $2500 for an 850 with a loader. My loader was a Wagner that I didn't need so I sold it for $400. My sheetmetal could also use some help. The aftermarket hasn't seen enough demand for Hundred series sheetmetal it seems...time to head for the boneyard. There is a FNH dealer near me with enough old hoods to restore 4 or 5 hundred series tractors, but he won't sell. Even has an old Ferguson with half tracks on it rusting away on his back lot.
