I'm Considering purchasing a flail mower . I've located a Ford model 917H that is a 90" cut. What size tractor is needed for proper operation. I have a 8N But have been considering a Ford 3000. The asking price for the mower is 1320.00 and is said to be in excellent condition. Is this a fair price?. Thanks

I HAVE A 88" FLAIL MOWER
IT TAKES AT LEAST A 45 HP TRACTOR TO PULL IT
A 8N IS ABOUT 27 HP
A 3000 IS AROUND 35-45(DEPENDING ON THE MODEL)

Do not try to run a 90" flail mower with your 8N. You need 40-50 HP. A 3000 should be fine.

If the mower is in very good condition, $1320 is probably a fair price. Check the condition of the roller & shaft bearings, knives, etc.

I have an ancient 6' Mott that I run on my 4 cyl. Ford 4000. It works well. I paid $450 and it was pretty beat up.

I have a Matthews 72" flail that I run on a 640. The Ford handles it OK, but I wouldn't go any larger with that tractor. Don't think it's possible to run a 90" flail on an N.

I paid $500 for my flail used. The unit costs $4500 new. But what constitutes a good used price might vary.

Flails bounce alot. Check the unit you are looking at for hairline cracks anywhere. You might get the price down more.

Good luck

Tom

I run a 90" Ford flail mower behind my 2600.
It is a bit heavy for the tractor but my ground
is very flat so I can get away with it. I am
not sure of the recommended HP for a mower of this
size but my tractor is around 33 PTO HP. By the
way I paid $550 for mine, it was used by a local
township for maintaining parks and roadsides.
Hope this helps in your decision.

Joe

I have a Ford model "917L Special" which is a 60" cut. I have run it on both my 8N and my 3000. It is about as large as you want to go with an 8N (don't forget the over-running pto clutch). However, it works really great on the 3000 which has live pto and live hydraulics. The 917H you've described is probably a little large even for the 3000 - way too big for the 8N. By the way, I paid just over $1,000 for my mower: It was new, but the dealer had it in inventory for a while.

As for the Ford 3000, you will love it. Get the 8 speed, manual transmission (not the SOS)and try for one with power steering. All your implements will work fine on it - actually better than on the 8N.
