I grew up in the seat of an 8N, and once or twice used the neighbor's 9N, but that's the exent of my Ford knowledge.

Can someone explain the progression of the Ford Model #s, beyond the 8N, and what features were added/available? Or lead me to a site that does? I've tried TractorTips.Com, but am still "lost."

Joe's got more knowledge about this than I do. Something about "being there" that sure helps. For the progression from 9n thru the "thousand" series up to 1964 I recommend the following site:

9n
2n
8n 1947-49 front dist 1950-52 with side mount
NAA 1953-54
600 & 800 series 1955-57
601 & 801 series 1957-58
2000 & 4000 series (4 cyl)1958-1964
2,3,4000 and up 1965-1975
26,36,4600 and up 1976-1983
23,26,28,29,36,39,4610 (blue hood stripe)1983-85
28,29,39,4610 and up (black stripe)1985-????

thats the best I remenber the progression, I left the Ford Dealer in 1996 and the 10 series was starting to be replaced with the 30 series as FORD was being replaced by FIAT, to list all the changes that occured thru the ages would take volumes. Find a 9n one day next to a new one and sit back and just compare ! The base idea hasn't changed, just the frills ! then again, put an 8 or 9n next to the mule they were built to replace and compare, but, watch your step behind the mule !

I stand corrected ! 62,63, & 1964 were the prior model 2 & 4000 years. I remembered that right after I got off last night. Guess I'm getting old!

Joe M. ,You guys are all pretty close on the years of the tractors when the models changed but here are a few more details, The 600 & 800 series started in Fall 1954 Ford produced just over 10,000 1954 tractors besides the the NAA's, I have this in Ford literature and I have a 1954 Ford 860 purchased from the original owner serial #6186. The 601-801 series tractors were produced until July 1962, and the 2000-4000 series tractors were started in Aug 1962 and ended in Sept 1965, all were 4cyl. tractors, Even though Ford was begining production of the 3 cyl. tractors for 1965. I also have this in Ford literature and have 1962 Ford 841 4x4 produced in June 62 and a 1962 Ford 4000 4x4 produced in Aug 62. Locally today I looked at a 1965 Ford 4000 4cyl. loader/hoe for sale for around $5000, nice machine. Thanks Tony Jacobs
