I recently purchased a 1954 Ford 850 (Serial number 10500). The owner traded it in for a bigger and better tractor, and along with the tractor gave the dealership the original 850 manual. As the tractor waited for a new buyer, a fella expressed interest, and asked for the manual and took it home. He never returned the manual...but said to the dealer recently "I misplaced it." I have been trying to get the dealer to get it back... Is this something I should continue to pursue because I believe they are few and hard to come by. I plan to restore this 850 over the years and it would be nice to have the original manual as a curiosity thing...but I don't know the value on this manual ...and wonder if I should continue to get it back, or just forget it? Thoughts about pursuing the manual and value of it? thanks in advance. tm

Agree with Don. Get the manual. Also buy a reprint from N-Newsletter (or elsewhere) so you'll have one you can refer to for information when your fingers are greasy. They're fairly cheap and look just like the originals except they say "Ford New Holland" and "reprint" on them. The info is just as valuable. I don't have an original manual for mine so I ordered a reprint from the FNH dealer. It was disappointing, paper cover, black and white....looked like it came off a xerox machine. Then i bought the N-Newsletter version and was much more impressed. Has the stiffer card stock cover with red and black, etc, original style binding. Wasn't expensive, about $12.95 as I remember. Still, that Gomer owes you the original manual. He probably sold it on ebay for $30. Write him a letter first letting him know if you don't get the manual or $100 in 10 days the matter will be turned over to your attorney and maybe the police (petty theft).

I certainly would continue to try to get it back. In fact you might even get your friendly lawyer to send a registered letter to the borrower suggesting he find the misplaced item and return it to you or you may be forced to take more drastic action. I don't normally like this sort of thing but it sounds to me that the borrower wants to keep it. I have an old car and I have the original manuals for it. I would also be interested in having an original 850 owner's manual for my 850! My 2 cents worth.
