My 1985 Ford 1910 4X4 tractor has a "clunk" that ocurrs intermittently. I worry that a gear is slipping over another gear or something equally serious. However, the tractor operates fine. Is there any test I can do short of tearing it down to determine the problem?

If this 1910 is anything like my 1500 it could be that the differential lock is not fully disengaging and the clunk you hear is it either grabbing or letting go. You can forcibly pull the lock lever out of the case about 1/2" (this pulls against the spring) and WD40 it real good and that might solve your problem. Cheap enough to try anyway

good luck
