2000 PTO trouble

While baling hay with the 2000 ('64), discovered that the PTO lever was disengaging on its own with increasing regularity. When I bought it last fall, it would pop out while bush hogging if I hit some thick brush (not too often). With the baler, though, I had to resort tying the lever back to keep it engaged. I also noticed there is about an inch or more play in and out on the PTO shaft as well. What kind of repairs am I looking at?

Thanks,
Ken

You probably broke the snap ring retaining the PTO shaft in place. This is accessible from the rear of the tractor after you remove the four bolts holding the PTO shaft cover (not the cap) in place. You will probably need to drain the fluid from the differential before you open this up. You might need a new PTO cover gasket, too.

You might have a more complicated problem with the PTO shifter. Can't tell you how to fix that.

Yep it's probly the snap ring causing the in and out play like Dave said. The jumping out of gear is because the shift yoke is worn to engage and disengae the pto.

The way to fix that is to take the shifter out and buildup (weld&grind) the shifter end til it fits the slip again.

Ken, had the same of problem with a 74 3000 that I had. When brush hogging heavy grass the PTO lever would pop out of gear once in a while. Never did figure out what caused it. Sorry I don't have a solution, but you weren't the only person to have the problem.
