Ford 3000 diesel and thermo start questions.

We have a VERY hard to start Ford 3000 diesel. Part of the problem (I assume) is that this tractor will set for months between use and is VERY hard to start, especially when the weather gets below 40 deg F. I understand that there are no glow plugs on these tractors (it is a 66 or 67 model) and ether is generally a no-no. Once the tractor starts, it runs like a champ and will easily restart. It's when it sets or the weather cools that the starting becomes difficult.

I was reading in the owners manual that one could outfit these tractors with a "thermo-start" option.

My question is - are these things available today, how much do they cost, are they difficult to install, do they work and I'd appreciate any other suggestions that will get us to a "tap the key" and the #$@% thing starts!

Much thanks,
Bill

I have put a glow plug in the intake on a 70 something model 3000. I remove the plug in the back side of the manifold and screwed the glow plug in. I replace the ignition switch with one that would control the glow plug and ran a wire between the two. Helped cold starting a lot.

Cost was about $40.00 for the plug and switch.

Not sure why you consider starting fluid (ether) as a no-no. Some 3000's came with an option of a can of starting fluid mounted on the tractor with a button near the seat to spray with. Can't start mine at all without it when it gets cold (engine needs a overhaul). Hard on the starter to keep turning over and over. I'd rather use a very short squirt of starting fluid and be done with it. I use it every time I start the tractor after the engine has cooled down. Ben doing it that way for years with no apparent problems.

Just my uneducated opinion.

Best regards,
Mike M - Tx

FYI

I have a Ford 841 Diesel with 3200 hours ...starts below freezing with NO glow plugs! They are NOT even working as the push button switch broke many years ago! I have NEVER used either!

If you have GOOD compression and injectors/pump should start a least down to freezing with NO problems from my view point.

Mike you may wonder why that tractor needs over hauled well its spelled, Starting fluid can, thats why, With proper maintnance, and timming on the injector pump, set right, it should start with out starting fluid, that stuff is a darn good way to break a $400.00+ Crankshaft, and ruin a perfect engine. i own and worked on many ford diesel's that like my 2600 thats a 79 model, Give it -20 degress out side, and i almost never use the thermo start, with in 9 seconds of cranking shes done burping and is up and running
