Is the PTO on a 4000 suppose to engage smoothly. Mine doesn't. When I engage the PTO there a banging from the brush hog as it starts suddendly. It is not the brush hop, because I have used two different ones and they both do the same thing. Also, when the PTO is not engaged the brush hog still spins until it hits heavy grass.

I just recently completed some work on my 4000 PTO. Not sure what model you have but I have an independant PTO which is ingaged by the hydrolics. I usually idle mine down and engage it with a slight banging noise. However, with the independant PTO, the hydrolics should open up a brake and engage a clutch to start your PTO somewhat gently. My brush hog will stop spinning and I can not move my PTO by hand with PTO disengaged. Its probably no big deal, maybe your brake or the springs on your brake for you PTO are a little worn. (If this is the type of PTO you have.)

After looking at the operator's manual it looks like I have live PTO. Would this have a brake similiar to an independent PTO?

What is meant by double clutching?

I have a mid to late 70s model 4000. I assume it would have an independent PTO, but I am not sure. From what I have read on previous messages, it sounds like the brake on my PTO has worn down. Is this a costly repair to get the brake fixed? What are the dangers of not doing it? If it is an independent PTO it shouldn't "push" the tractor if I am trying to stop. Right?

My 800 (the forerunner to the 4000) bangs when you put the bush hog on. I don't think the bang comes from the PTO in the tractor. I usually just clutch twice to put less stress on it until it comes up to speed. I never thought much about it. If this is a problem, I would like to know! I think that all bush hogs spin until the the blades stop naturally.
