I am not sure if i am in the right place, but if you can help or direct me it will be greatly appreciated.
We have a 1980 1700 Ford.It is stuck in 4th range. Transmission fluid is full. If he takes the cover off would it be hard to fix himself or should we just take to a dealer? My husband is mechanically inclined. Is there a site i can go to or a manual to purchase. Any help will greately appreciated. You can email me directly with the subject Ford tractor. Thank you.

Is this a two-stage clutch for live PTO? Does the range shifter move without results or is the shift lever itself stuck? Does the clutch seem to operate normally through the gears and into reverse? Immediately behind the shifter are two cover bolts that hold in the detent springs for the shifter. It ispossible that the detent balls and or springs have gotten messed up...perhaps rusted in place. Removal of these two cover bolts and liberal appliance of WD40 into the detent holes might be a quick fix...other than that you would have to remove the cover and look for obvious bent forks of sheared pins.

Good Luck

I have an '81 model 1700 and this has happened twice in the 10 years I've owned it.

The easy fix is to remove the bolt in the top plate where the detent for the range lever hides. It is the one near the dip stick.

That should free up the range lever. I've noticed that if you only shift one lever at a time, the problem never occurs, but if you try to move both at the same time it will eventually happen.

Good luck
