I have been reading the comments on this board almost daily for a number of months. I have learned a lot from you all and would greatly appreciate any comments about a tractor I am considering buying from a farmer I know.

Its a 68 Ford 4000 3 cyl with 8 speed manual. Starts right up and does not smoke. Tin is in very good shape no dents and no fender rust. Paint is okay for being 32 years old tractor was shed kept. Rear tires starting to show some age will probably need replaced within the next couple of years. Power steering maybe a problem; seems a little weak might need work on the power steering cylinder. Other hydralics work great. Tractor owned by one owner and has been and is worked daily.

I know from reading your comments that the 4000 is a good reliable general purpose tractor. Is repairing the power steering on a 4000 complicated or can a reasonable person with no hydo experience do this at home. Are new p.s. cylinders expensive?

I would also appreciate an idea of what I should offer for this tractor?

Thank You

If you needed the whole kit to convert from manual to P.S., (which you likely do not), one of the vendors under "Parts & Supplies" lists a complete kit for $1,095, a cylinder for $220, a pump for $575.
-but probably you'd just need a rebuild.
The "classified ads" list a ford 4000 for 4500.
The "Photo ads" list a 4000 for $5250.

Not that any of this applies to your situation, but it demonstrates another method of utilizing this site and its links....

My dad has a 74 4000 3 cyl gas that has tough PS (it takes power to steer!) but we have a industrial loader on it. It shouldent be to hard to get at to fix. The P.S. cylinder is on the left side. you can check out the pump and cylinder by jaking up the front wheels and see if every thing is ok. Give him about $2500.00 or go to www.equipment-locator.com and look around for a price but you might be able to use the tires and P.S. to chew him down
