I am looking at buying a friend's Ford Super Dexta 2000 tractor. It is a '64 3 cylinder diesel. For several months now he says the engine will be running fine and then lose power and quit, as if first one cylinder then another die. He says it often will run between 15 minutes up to several hours before this happens. When it does happen, he sprays some Hotshot in the air intake and it starts back up. He has replaced the fuel filter and put in new diesel fuel, even used an additive yet the problem persists. I am interested in the tractor but don't want to take on a big problem. He says it has an "English engine" - what does that mean? Also any comments on the Dexta 2000 tractor in general would be appreciated. Thanks for your help. Andy

The tractor has a Perkins engine. They are used in a lot of other tractors such a Ferguson and Massy Ferguson. I would check the fuel flow out of the tank. I can't remember if the shut off valve had a screen on it or not. Also check and make sure the tank is venting and not creating a vacum.
