3000 Diesel injection pump timing

There was a thread here a short while ago on cold weather diesel starting procedures. In this weather it starts up just fine. Below 40 deg, I use ether. The comments here has me interested in improving that. In that adjusting the timing on the inline pump is a bit involved, I am seeking advice on what setting to employ. If I find that the pump is not timed to spec (19 deg btdc), I will adjust it to that. But, if I find that it is to spec, which way should it be adjusted? Should it be advanced or retarded? Thanks.

Neither. Use the cold start button (the little button poking out where the kill lever appears to pivot on). This button will do two things: pump a lot more fuel into the engine, and also retard the timing for easier starting. To use this button, first make sure the kill lever is in the run position. Then set the throttle lever at least half way. Push in on the button, you should feel it click and stay in. Once the engine is running, it should pop back out automatically.

As i read that i felt almost totaly disgusted, Im not saying this to sound like a horses patutty but. THERE IS NO REASON WHATSOEVER TO USE STARTING FLUID ON A DIESEL ENGINE Let alone at 40 degrees , They should outlaw that crap because of the Damage it does to a diesel engine and Just is nothing more than operator abuse to be shooting either to a Freaking diesel at 40 degrees now come on

Thanks for the advice. It was your comments from this issue a few weeks back that got me thinking down this line. I was hoping to inspire a discussion that would reveal some other cold starting methods. Up here one needs to have a few available.

Hey there "dieseldoc", I wasn't advocating the use of ether!! This cold start button I'm talking about is a factory system incorporated into the pump. All it does is injects more fuel than normal during cranking and retards the timing, that's it!! To say this will kill the engine is nonsense!

There are many factory ether systems out there by the way that are totally safe. They inject the ether through a hole so small you can barely see through the hole. Do I prefer other starting aids such as block heaters and warm air heaters? You bet! But ether, properly used, is sometimes also necessary, especially for an older engine with compression somewhat lacking.

Bern 1st of all was it you saying you gave the tractor a snort of either @ 40 , nope i dont think it was you so i was not implying this to you was i? True Factory Starting Fluid setups was set to keep Damage to a minumal, Im talking the Crap that comes in a can. their is a big difference of either fumes and wet either tee totaly wiping the oil off the cylinder walls

I HAVE A 275 FORD LEAMEN WITH INJECTORS #6801017 LUCAS,THEY SAID THIS IS FOR A 250 H.P. AND I NEAD A 6801035 TO GET IT UP TO 300 H.P. PS.TO ADVANCE THE TIMING DO I JUST TURN THE PUMP A LITTLE TO THE MARK 24%AHEAD THANK YOU. ALL SO IF YOU KNOW WHEAE TO GET INJECTION TIPS FOR THIS; THANK YOU AGAIN [ DEAN ]

Another thought on the matter of starting diesels is having enough cranking amps to spin the motor. Average diesel tractors should have at least 1100 to 1800 cold cranking amps. If a diesel hesitates through compression stroke, this can be a caused by a weak starter, too small battery cable or not enough CCA. I believe the 3000 series is supposed to have a 4 DLT battery.

I agree, do NOT use ETHER!!

I have a Ford 841-D,starts down to ZERO without even using the GLOW plugs! Yes one needs a VERY strong battery and good connections with 550 PSI compression on these Diesels. If your engine and injection pump/injectors are in GOOD condition ..should be an easy starter.

FYI. My GLOW plug push button and relay broke a long time ago ...still starts right up!

The worse thing one could do would be to turn on the GLOW plugs after injecting ETHER! Good by all! :-)
