I have a 1969 gas powered Ford 3000 with the 4 Speed Transmission and Transmission PTO. It runs about 3 to 4 mph in first gear which is a little fast for some field work. I was wondering if I could change transmissions and install an 8 speed in it? If so, are there any problems I should know about?

Many 8-speeds also are equipped with a two stage clutch providing live PTO. One so equipped would also require you to install a two stage clutch and the proper flywheel in your tractor. If the transmission PTO you now have is adequate for your needs, find an 8 speed w/ trans PTO or a 6 speed tranny will give you more gears with your present clutch set up. You will want to find out ahead of time if the transmission output shaft of your new transmission has the same spline count as yours. Different transmissions MAY have different ring & pinion ratios and different spline counts. I can't say for sure, a parts book will tell you.
