Just recently purchased a 1954 NAA from my brother
who owned it for about 5 years. It has been converted over to 12 volt. problem is when I try to engage PTO to bushhog or put a load on the tractor its starts to spit, sputter, and backfire.
Routine maint. was always done (points, cond, plugs, oil, etc). Would appreciate input before I buy lots of parts especially carburetor. It cranks up fine and runs great just when you take it to the field for work thats when the problems arise. I believe the carb. is original. Any help will be appreciated.

I would try to adjust the mixture control on the carb first. It sounds to me like it's running too lean. Could be that there is a restriction in the gas flow but not as likely. When engine is cold, carefully disconnect the steel fuel inlet line at the carb and turn on the fuel petcock to observe flow for a second. This should tell you if the screens are clogged. Another problem causing backfiring could be an air leak somewhere in the carb/manifold parting surfaces or seals around the butterfly valve shaft. Lastly, timing may be off.

Many thanks Dave. Have checked fuel flow and thats ok. Will start with mixture and proceed from there. Thanks again.
