I'm thinking of converting my 1955 850 to 12 volt. Will a 12 volt starter from a diezel work and is that the way to go? What other changes should I make?

My 850 is still 6 volt.It starts easy in the winter and has not let us down. Only if my battery, generator and regulator all went would I think of converting to 12 volt. My two cents worth. To convert you will look at many of the good diagrams on this site and see that you will need a good rebuilt/new delco alternator off of lets say a 78 Chev truck (75amp or better) an indicator lamp or diode, resistor for your coil(or new 12 volt coil with internal resistor)and new lamps to replace the 6 volt ones in your housings. The starter will be fine as long as you don't crank it for than 5 seconds at a time.

Stump Puller is on the money! The old starter will work just fine. The caution is that you do not want to crank for long periods, as the increased heat from the 12v system (increased starting current) will cause the starter motor to burn-out much quicker (minutes instead of years) than with the 6v system.

NORMALLY, WHEN YOU CONVERT TO 12 VOLTS YOU USE THE OLD STARTER AS IT IS. JUST GO FOR AN ALT WHICH GIVES YOU HIGHER CHARGING CURRENT AT LOW SPEEDS AND LESS MAINTENANCE. IF YOU WERE BRAVE YOU CAN ALSO USE THE OLD GEN AND USE A 12V REGULATOR WITH IT. GOOD LUCK.
