Missing serial numbers

A tractor dealer has a Ford 801 for sale that was taken in trade. It appears to be an 841 ("powermaster" with 4-speed transmission, live lift, no live pto)

the serial number has been ground off. Looks like it was removed long ago - no attempt to disguise its absence. The dealer said the former owner had it for many years and that he (the dealer) was not concerned about the lack of serial numbers.

I am considering buying the tractor, but should I be concerned about the serial numbers?

I agree with Ray, The battery sets right above the sn. and in 40 years there is a good chance the battery leaked. I have a 1961 801D still running the sos tranny and guess what no sn.

My experience has been that the battery acid erasure of sn is a bigger problem on the diesel units. The arrangement of air intake and other plumbing necessitated the battery on the diesel tractors be moved about 4" to the left so that, as you say, the battery is directly over the serial number area. On gas tractors, the battery is over to the left so any leakage tends to land on the other side of the tractor (where the hyd pump and proofmeter cable are).

Yuo're right Jim, Mine is a diesel and this week I saw a gas one at an antique tracto show and the battery is not nearly as big and the air intake was above the serial number.

Bill, there are many of these old tractors out here that the serial #s are no longer there . Plaacement of the battery allows acid to run down onto the serial # area and etch the cast to where the #s are gone. fdwiw, ray

Here's my guess: since the sn is stamped on an area of the transmission, it could be that the tranny blew up one day and Mr Original Owner decided to replace it with a junkyard version. Well the serial number goes with the trans, so now he's got an 841 with a serial number and model number that says it's an 831 or 871 or 861 and that bothers him, so he just grinds off the bogus number. Have heard this was more likely with early S-O-S tractors. When the S-O-S went bad the farmer opted for a 4 speed replacement.
