i have just purchased a 1967 4000-d. The problem is "flutter" when the engine is not under load. The local mechanic told me to throw away the cheap muffler and put on the $90 muffler. This helped some (maybe just masked it as quieter muffler) but it still "flutters" like it missing.
Under load its fine and pulls great. It does it the most at full throttle without a load. The other problem is the diesel knock. I have owned allot of tractors (first ford diesel) and this is by far the loudest i have ever heard. Could the problems be related? like timing or injectors?
One more question - the tranny makes noise and has a vibration in high range (5th gear and up)
also under load only.

Any comments will be highly appreciated

thanks in advance

Jeff

You probably have a CAV injection pump? They have been known to have a flutter or stumble at high idle with no load.

As far as the knock goes you may need a dealer to look into it and test the injectors and check the timing on the pump.

If the timing is off, you should have a hard start problem and low power!
