I was moving my 3000 from place to another and had to travel about a mile over a paved road. All of a suddent the steering wheel just wouldn't work. I mean I could turn it and turn it and it would not turn the wheels. Is it a hard job to rebuild the steering box. Oh, the tractor has power stering.

AJ, I had the same thing happen to me the first of July.

The bearings at both the top and bottom of the shaft had fallen apart. I suspect the same thing has happened to you. Mine is manual, but as I remember looking at the parts book, the "guts" of both, which turn the steering arms, are the same.

Not a "hard" job, just some nusience factors.... like you have to remove the gas tank, which means you have to remove the "dash", which means you have to disconnect the electric, choke, and tach shaft, and you have to remove the engine hood. Welll... I forgot getting the steering arms off.... THAT was hard!!! I had to use a HEAVY DUTY gear puller. Even then I had to use a vise-grip chain strap wrench around the jaws to keep them from slipping off.

BE SURE you preload the new bearings correctly! On my 3000 the "idiot" that repaired it didn't shim it right which I think contributed to the failure. Also, mine did not have the lower bearing retainer which may be why the shimming was wrong.

I think you need to spend about $70 and get the Ford Service Manual for the 3000 (has everything in it!), it is a reprint but just like original. You can get it from your FNH dealer or the board sponsors.

Where in VA are you? I'm in Flint Hill, VA. just south of Front Royal.

Larry

I agree with what both of these guys are saying, except that a power steering gearbox is the same but the control valve is a whole new ball game! When you tear one apart, you better have a service manual handy to set the correct preload.

I would first check the fluid in the reservoir and then pressure test the pump, around 600-700 PSI dead head. from there I would pressure test the control valve for each side. this would tell you if you had a stuck check valve.

It may be a possible that an assist cylinder has blow it's seals. This could also cause a no boost scenerio.
