Well, got my first tractor and associated problems. Thanks for the advice on valve cover removal. Never tried this week-end since the starter motor went out. Also, I plan to replace the starter switch sice it only makes contact about 10 % of the time. How do I go about replacing it? Also, I cannot even turn the fuel cut-off valve. Is that difficult to replace and how? I believe I have the "utility" version since I have no draw bar, head lights or proofmeter. It does have a non-working fuel gage and a working oil pressure gauge. Looks like I'll be a constant member of this group. Maybe I'll even be able to contrbute some day. Thanks, Al

IF you are running 12 Volts on a poor starting 600 like mine was you will burn out your starter prety quick. You want a 12Volt starter if you can find one. Central Tractor sells a 12V starter which is listed for the 172 CID Diesel. It is kinda pricey through them, but it will work. I have also had the fields and armature replaced with 12 V versions on my 6V starter at a automotive electrical rebuilder shop. My guys charged me $65 to do it but I think they goofed on the price.
IF you are running 6V ignore the above. Just get your starter rebuilt and new cables and solenoid and you will be fine. Keep those connections clean and shiny!

Thanks guys, Starter motor checked out O.K. I bypassed the starter switch and sonenoid. Voltmeter says the battery is O.K.. I'll check the cables out this weekend. I'll also check a "rust buster" spray out on the fuel valve. Yep, a new one is quite pricey!, $52 at the local New Holland place. Al

AL,
Maybe I can help with the fuel shutoff question, as I just did it last week. First get a product called PB Blaster. Its like a supercharged Liquid Wrench. Wal Mart now carries it. Try spraying it on the shutoff valve and wait a day. You may have to give it a couple of sprays a day for a couple days. Be patient! If that does not work, next step is to replace the valve. New Holland will charge you $50 for the valve!!! The easiest way to work onit is to remove the valve cover. I tried the other way (valve cover on). Svae yourself a lot of misery and remove the valve cover. Its amazing how much extra working room it gives you. Hope that helps.
John

Thanks for the help. Turned out to be bad battery cables. Could not handle the current draw. I also had a faulty ignition switch which only effected the starting, not the cranking. Looks like I have to overhaul the carburetor now. Albe
